I just wanted to say that I did not intend this post as an offense to Christians. For them, Christmas is about the birth of Jesus. The timing of the festival is, however, about the winter solstice. Pope Gregory the Great created Christmas in the late sixth century when he instructed his missionaries to make Christianity more palatable to the northern European pagans by superimposing Christian stories on local pagan festivals, and the missionaries imposed the stories of the nativity on the northern European Jul, the celebration of the return of Freyr as the sun. Northern European and American Christmas traditions are, almost all of them, remnants of the pagan observances. Hence it is not inconsistent for a non-Christian glad to see the return of longer days to celebrate with American Christmas traditions.

Again, may whatever observance you practice at this time of year bring you joy and peace.

I should note here that when I say "if I couldn't have been aborted," I am not saying that I would rather have been aborted than born autistic. I would rather have been aborted than born, period. My parents didn't want me, and my mother was at pains to make it clear to me exactly how much she hadn't wanted me. She would have been the same way if I hadn't been born an Aspie. In her eyes, my crime was existing, compounded by feminity. Asperger's syndrome, not even named at the time, had nothing to do with it.
